One-Paragraph Review - Vagrant Story

Vagrant Story (PSX, 2000, 40-50 hrs) - A beautiful, if immensely complicated, late-generation PS1 game that artfully draws from survival horror, turn-based RPGs, platformers, and block-puzzle games. Its gorgeous art style is second-to-none on the platform, with impressive cinematic presentation even though cut-scenes are short and sparse. The story, which involves a whole lot of socio-political-religious intrigue, is difficult but absorbing thanks to its sharply-written characters and morally complex world. Equally baffling at first is the weapon crafting system, which, unlike most RPGs, demands total comprehension from the player in order to make progress. Mastery is daunting but also rewarding, giving the player a deep sense of ownership over what they create. Vagrant Story is recommendable ultimately for the dark spell it casts, for how you lose yourself in the intricacies of both its mechanics and its plot, for how it makes magic seem magical and tempers that whimsy with refreshing political cynicism. It is one of the precious few games where light and darkness don't represent good and evil but, in fact, may represent the opposite. Directed and produced by Yasumi Matsuno, whose Final Fantasy Tactics demonstrates a similarly black view of politics. Art direction by Hiroshi Minagawa. Character and environmental design by Akihiko Yoshida. Main programming by Taku Murata. And music by Hitoshi Sakimoto, at the absolute top of his game.

  1. I've actually been keeping my eye out for this one lately, but I've had no luck in finding it anywhere cheap. I've never actually played it and have only gleaned it through periphery, mostly by people citing it to describe other titles.

For a one paragraph review though, you've actually made the game a bit more enticing to me now. Good job.

Someone recently allowed me to finally get my hands on Demon's Souls though, so my search has been put on hold.

  2. I actually like Demon's Souls more, but when I first played Demon's Souls I was reminded a lot of Vagrant Story, mostly in terms of the deep character advancement system and extremely thick atmosphere. If you enjoy Demon's Souls for the many virtues it has other than its difficulty, I think you'd probably like Vagrant Story a lot.

  3. Yeah, I went through your lineage tracing post on it last night. I'm about 15 hours in myself. Definitely enjoying it, though it kind of makes me sad that the action-rpg in general hasn't really seen much movement at all, which is why I love it so much to begin with.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any recommendations there (i.e. action-RPGs)? Perhaps my own experiences are simply too limited.

It's also reminding me of a lot of titles I have a deep affinity for (e.g. Bushido Blade).

  4. Yeah. Demon's Souls reminded me a lot of Bushido Blade too.

Not sure what else I'd recommend for the "if you liked Demon's Souls you'll also like..." camp. The game reminds me a lot of Ultima Underworld, which I recommend if you haven't played it (and if you can get into a game from 1992).

The King's Field games aren't bad, but as I said in my blog post, they're no Demon's Souls. Oh! Well... it's not 3D, but I liked Odin Sphere for a lot of the same reasons I liked Demon's Souls and Vagrant Story. It's not as repetitive as people say, if you figure out the gardening and cooking mechanics which prevent you from having to grind.

  5. Yeah, the Ultima games have been on my list for a while now. I do intend to get to them eventually (most likely next year). I've no problem with 'going back' these days though (it's all I can seem to do actually). Odin's Sphere falls here as well. I've been waiting to snatch it up along with Murumasa. I'm also seeing an effect DS has had on me in regards to how I interact with other games, most notably the Kingdom Hearts titles, but that's a post I'm actually off to write now. =p

  6. I just read your posts on Thief Gold, and I am wondering if you saw my post from a while ago comparing Thief 3 to MGS4 as ideological statements about stealth and politics. Seems like the sort of thing you might appreciate.

  7. Funny that you mention it. I actually caught them last night in my late night/early morning readings. I even quoted you a few times on my Tumblr (http://is.gd/fvdPq & http://is.gd/fyF9b). =p

  8. This post has inspired me to give Vagrant Story another shot. I've had a soft spot for this game from the very first time I played the intro sequence. I've started it countless times but I can never seem to commit.

    P.S.
Parasite Eve, which used a very similar combat system, is a must-play.

  9. Actually there will be no game like this one.
Its copyrights where sold to final fantasy owner.
I loved this game so much :(
